So tonight, two friends of mine and myself embarked on a journey from Tel Aviv to Yafo to Bat Yam on foot. According to google maps this was approx. 14 kilometers or 8.7 miles, and the state we were in was quite extraordinary. We saw EVERYTHING, encompassing all three cities for all they had to offer. took about 6 hours. but we made it!! Just thought i would share. twitter.com/slirsch WORD

I was in the Arab Quarter of the old city Jerusalem yesterday, and stumbled upon a large group of Palestinians protesting, demanding the release of family members that are prisoners in Israel’s prison system, as well as Hana Shalabi, a Palestinian woman from the West Bank who has been undergoing a hunger strike for more than 40 days. She was held in an Israeli prison for 30 months, between 2009 and 2011 and was then released as part of the Gilad Shalit prisoner swap. However recently she was arrested again by Israeli policemen, and commenced a hunger strike on February 16. In her own indications, she had started a hunger strike to protest her own treatment and demand an end to the practice of administrative detention- a process in which Israeli policemen may arrest and imprison Palestinians with no charge. Upon examination by a doctor from the Physicians for Human Rights, ”she suffers from a low heartbeat rate, low blood sugar, loss of weight, weakness in muscles, yellowing of the eyes and high levels of salt in the blood which [has] affected her kidneys, causing her pain in her sides, especially the left side, as well as pain in chest bones.” Let’s hope and pray that Hana’s protests do not go in vain. Yesterday while walking thru the shook in downtown Jerusalem, I stumbled upon something very familiar presented very differently; I found raisins. These aren’t your average “Sun-Maid Seedless Raisins,” oh no. These raisins are dramatically larger, packing a seriously sweet and organic taste not replicated in America. I was so shocked & pleased to fall in love with the raisin a second time…

First let’s look at what a raisin is: a raisin is a dried grape. Grapes are grown abundantly throughout Israel, and wine is one of Israel’s first and most developed manufactured resources. Raisins have been consumed for hundreds perhaps thousands of years, originally used in the Middle East, similar to dates and prunes. These dried fruits are so popular in the Middle East because of the dry weather and long summers under tropical weather, which are ideal conditions for drying fruit. Also, raisins are regarded as a very nutritious, portable food. Sounds stupid, but hey, there is something special about dried grapes. In the bible, (old testament, torah, old book, whatever you want to call it) raisins are mentioned several times. in 1Samuel 25.18, it is cited as such “Abigail quickly got together 200 loaves of bread, 2 jars of wine, 5 dressed sheep, 5 seahs of parched corn, 100 cakes of raisin, and 200 cakes of pressed figs.” In this specific part of the Tanakh, or bible, David is in the wilderness of Paran (near modern day Northern Saudi Arabia) and in need of supplies, and Abigail supplies him with such. Cakes of raisins are mentioned in more places, such as 2Samuel 16:1 and 1Samuel 30:12. Ever since biblical times raisins have been hailed as a great, nutritious, and portable snack. Before drying, raisins are usually treated with Potash or Sulfur Dioxide, although it is currently “unknown” that these chemical have harmful effects when consumed by a user. But raisins are packed with natural anti-oxidents, so they should be worth while to consume. Just sharing some of my many thoughts. So until then, enjoy your raisins, have a grape day (:

PERFORMING ARTS FINAL PERFORMANCE- SUCCESS!

I am very late on this post, Tuesday night (the 6th of December) both the Performing Arts and Visual Arts students had their first trimester final open exhibit. This was an art gallery/fashion show by the Visual Artists and an “ambush theatre” performance by Performing Artists, which was initiated by Niv knocking over and breaking an “art piece” in the gallery and the “art piece’s” creator, (Bex as a French artiste) freaks out on him…this lead to a song which lead to the events compiling into the play. By far the greatest and most unique performance I’ve been apart of. The first scene I was in followed the song Niv and Matt played after the intentional breaking of said “art piece,” and was a joint dialogue with Rebecca.

After this scene came a dance by Charlie, then a three way scene in which I was imprisoned in a cage and the voice of artistic reason to the oppressors and those that instill premeditation in the minds of youth:

After the play was completely finished, followed by a song written by Bex performed by entire Performing Arts track, I played a song for the fashion show with an opera singer, and a set of my own.

^Niv getting down. lol. So after an extremely successful night, I can only begin to say that the moments of preparation are what made this possible.
